![]() Post Meridian, Roland explains his plan about the Guardian 'song'. However, with the Guardians issue taking priority, Jul is just tossed in a cell and left to go stir-crazy for a bit.įlash forward a few levels. Therefore far more dangerous and unpredictable than Jul could ever be. But unlike Jul who merely played to a crowd to suit his own ends in regards to the whole religious angle, Sali is a devoted Zealot, and borderline mad. Jul explains that Sali 'Nyon undermined him, stole the Song of Retribution (is that the right ship? I forget) and is now competing for the title of Didact's Hand, with a significant following. Jul and Halsey recap the events of Halo: Escalation's Janus Key arc. So they drag Jul back to Infinity for questioning. ![]() ![]() Before he can land the killing shot, Halsey intervenes, saying we need him alive. Osiris neutralises Jul's bodygaurds, Locke delivers a well-deserved beatdown on Jul. Halo 5 had the perfect opportunity to do exactly this with Jul.Īt the end of the first mission, cutscene plays out as normal. Help him overthrow the current leader of the Tal'dariim war tribes, and in exchange, he'll declare a ceasefire between your two warring factions. The 'god' that he worships betrayed him and their people, and he wants payback. About half-way through Legacy of the Void's campaign, Alarak shows up again. He tries to intimidate you, taunt you, goad you, etc. Fanatical aliens who worship ancient relics of a precursor alien society with zealous devotion, but ultimately are easily manipulated pawns with little agency of their own.ĭuring his first appearance, he acts. He shows up a few missions in as a high-ranking leader among the Tal'dariim, who are for all intents and purposes, Starcraft's version of the Covenant. If you want a good example of how to do this RIGHT, look to the character of Alarak in Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void. These characters are disposeable so long as it serves a short-term goal." It reeks of the comic-book style Brian Reed and those who are generally sub-par comic writers are so eager to adopt. Using Jul as a tool for a gimmicky short-lived fight scene and little more is not good narrative crafting. They had a whole feature-length mini-series to make us like Locke. They could've swapped him out for Sali 'Nyon or any generic Zealot if they were just going for "hey look, Locke is cool". The general consensus seems to be that Halo 5's abrupt killing-off of him was a waste of potential, and sadly I must agree.
